Horror Movie Challenge: Day 10

A Horror Movie Everyone Loves But You Don't 

      Wow, this is a tough question. Horror movies like anything else are really subjective but horror movies have such extremely loyal fans. I have a lot of answers for this questions and I know a lot of people are going to disagree with my answers.

The Exorcist

     Highly placed on most lists and a film some people even today refuse to watch, The Exorcist is one of the most hyped horror movies of all time. I watched it for the first time when I was 15 and on a horror movie kick where I went through the entire horror movie section at a local Move Gallery (RIP). Maybe because I was expecting too much but the film definitely underwhelmed. I thought it was interesting and unique compared to the slashers that usually dominated the horror genre but I didn't really like it. I didn't find it scary or suspenseful and after one viewing I have never felt the desire to watch it again. I have seen many other exorcism films since and I've liked a few but it's definitely not a sub-genre that I'm into.

Halloween

     

      Halloween is another classic horror films that millions of peole love and in many cases spawned their addiction to horror films. Sadly, I do no count myself among them. I watched Halloween as a child and then again as a teen and although I like the film I don't love it. In all honesty I much prefer the sequel and I don't care for any of the sequels. Michael as a character doesn't really do anything for me, he seems similar to Jason but his motivations aren't as clear. I hated the Rob Zombie remake but the first part that delves into Michael's childhood was fantastic and I would have loved to see more of that story.

Favorite Supernatural Horror Movie

        This is such a hard question because most horror movies are supernatural in some way. To make this a bit easier I will choose from ghost films since that's the type of movie I instantly thought of.

Insidious

     This is a newer film but it has definitely become a favorite. This movie actually scared me and horror movies so rarely do that anymore.

Your Favorite Foreign Horror Movie

Let The Right One In

 
   Let The Right One In is a 2008 Swedish film based on the novel of the same name. Oskar is bullied at school, has no friends and lives with his mother. One day he meets Eli and the two become extremely close- the only problem is that Eli is a vampire. This movie is amazing and it is a fresh take on vampires. The acting of the two child stars is great and the cinematography is beautiful.

A Horror Movie You Think No One Has Seen

    I'm a huge horror fan and have been since I was a kid. I have seen lots of independent and foreign horror  films. Picking a horror movie that is unknown to horror fans is pretty impossible so I'll pick some films that a casual horror fan might not of heard of.

Dance of the Dead

    

         Dance of the Dead is an independent zombie film made in 2008. It was made with little money and featured a lot of unknown actors. It is a great movie and has a place in my top ten zombie films.

Night of the Creeps

     I am a huge fan of 80's movies and I had never heard of this movie. It is really enjoyable and had some great characters.

Martyrs

     Martyrs is a French horror film made in 2008. I rarely meet anyone who has seen this movie let alone heard of it. It is one of the most disturbing films that I have ever seen. It is scary, suspenseful and shocking.

Favorite Horror Remake

     Remakes are a sensitive subject to horror fans and pretty much movie fans in general. In my opinion remakes should only be made if ,(1) the original film is so dated that the emotions, theme, characters, intensity, etc. fail to come across to the viewer or (2) a new or fresh take is executed that doesn't ruin the original or becomes a carbon copy of it. I have enjoyed some remakes but more likely than not they usually suck. Here are a few remakes that I loved and in some cases improved on the original.




The Mummy
 

     Out of all the classic horror movies this one was my least favorite. I loved Boris Karloff in Frankenstein but The Mummy was extremely slow paced and boring. The remake didn't go the horror movie route and instead became an action flick but it still vastly improved on the source material. I would love to see a new horror movie take on the mummy concept done right.

      Remakes of foreign horror films are some of the most hated-the original is usually great but people won't watch it because they don't want to read subtitles. So an American remake is produced and the results are usually far from stellar.  The Ring was one of the few remakes that I loved and ended up liking more than the original Japanese version. Ringu is a good movie but The Ring had more scares and felt like a more complete film.





Texas Chainsaw Massacre





     I already know some people are going to hate me for this but I preferred the remake over the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The original is a classic and it is extremely creepy but it has started to feel dated. I appreciated the fact that the remake stayed in the 70's and didn't put the concept in a modern setting.

Horror Movie Challenge; Day 4

A Horror Movie You Thought You'd Love But Didn't

     There are a lot of horror movies that have disappointed me over the years but if I had to choose it would be a sub genre that has disappointed me the most. I have always loved werewolves but there are not very many decent werewolf movies. Blood and Chocolate and Skinwalkers are two recent werewolf movies that failed to deliver.

Favorite Classic Horror Movie



     Out of all the classic horror movies,which for me is pre-1960, I love The Wolf Man the best. Lon Chaney Jr. was great in the role, I especially loved how he portrayed the pain that the curse was causing him.

The Last Horror Movie You Saw In The Theater



      I love horror movies but I don't go to see them in the theater that often, mostly because I don't have many friends who are as into them as I am. I loved the original movie and I was really excited about this one. I liked it a lot, granted the monster didn't look nearly as good as it did in the original.

Your First Horror Movie





     The first movies I remember ever watching were Disney movies and horror movies-which strangely enough are still my favorite movies to watch. Child's Play was one of the first horror movies I watched and it remains a favorite to this day. It was also one of the few horror movies that actually scared me. Freddy, Jason, Michael, even Pinhead didn't scare me but Chucky did. I think it was because he was small and could hide in more places to jump out and kill me-I have no idea but he freaked me out like no other. The movie is still enjoyable as are most of the sequels except for the Seed of Chucky which I really didn't care for.
