60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 21

Your Least Favorite Asian Drama Actress?

As I mentioned before, female roles in dramas tend to be the least well written  so it is hard to determine whether the actress or the character is to blame for a poor performance. I have seen actresses that I have hated in one role but love in another and in that case it is obviously the writing that is the culprit.

Bae Suzy

It is quite common for kpop stars to transition into acting roles and some are actually really talented (Park Yoo Chun, Yoon Eun Hye, etc). But truthfully most are not, which is the case here. I first watched Suzy in Dream High and I loved it-I enjoyed the story, music and characters. While Suzy's performance acting wise was by far the worst, it perfectly fit her character so it didn't detract too much from the overall enjoyment of the drama. I next watched her in Big, which wasn't a great drama but featured a decent performance by Gong Yoo. Suzy's character was basically identical to her Dream High performance except she didn't sing. I didn't dwell too much on it because the drama was already pretty flawed and she was just a supporting character. Suzy's performance in Gu Family Book is what drove home her lack of acting skills and placed her far above any other Asian drama actress that I disliked. Suzy was horribly miscast in GFB, a fantasy/period drama that required much more of her than her previous teen dramas/roles where she could get away with being stiff and relatively emotionless. Suzy is a shinning example of popularity overshadowing talent. I am in no way saying she is untalented, she has a decent voice and I like her group Miss A. I am simplying stating that when a kpop star wants to transition into acting that it may be a good idea to actually take acting lessons first.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 20

Your Favorite Drama OST (Instrumental)?

I find that historical dramas tend to have the best instrumental soundtracks. The Princess' Man has a beautiful soundtrack, both vocal and instrumental, that really compliments the romance, action, and drama.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 19

Your Favorite Drama Genre

I love a lot of Asian drama genres(themes of life, friendship, mystery, suspense, action, melo, law, historical, family and you) but my favorite is romance. Romance is usually the focus of most Asian dramas, which can be a good or bad thing. I am a helpless romantic and Asian dramas fulfill that need perfectly. I have found that after watching so many Asian dramas/films, that my perception of romance is much different than it was before. Upon re-watching American tv shows/ films, I have found that I don't find them as romantic as I once did. Romance in Asian dramas is my ideal-love and physical intimacy doesn't just happen, it is important and has meaning. Relationships are developed slowly and there is build up to romantic exchanges.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 18

Name A Drama You Dropped and Why?

I don't drop dramas, I have a good number of dramas on hold but I will eventually finish them. I just have to finish dramas, even if they cause me physical pain. There are quite a few that I wanted to drop (Devil Beside You, Personal Taste, etc) but I feel like I can't properly rate or review something unless I finish it.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 17

Favorite Drama Character?

Kim Joo Won

After 2 years and 130+ dramas, Kim Joo Won remains my favorite drama character. Male leads in dramas are mostly pretty uniform regarding their personalities-rich, selfish, mean, cold, arrogant. Kim Joo Won fits this description perfectly but he somehow managed to still be a likable person. His character experienced amazing development over the course of the drama, making him all the more endearing. Joo Won may fit some of the male lead standards but his quirky personality and growth set him apart from the rest.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 16

Your Favorite Actress?

Shin Min Ah

I fell hard for Min Ah after watching her in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and I have since watched all her dramas and films. She is beautiful as well as a fantastic actress. My favorite of her works are MGIAG, Arang and the Magistrate, The Beast and the Beauty, and My Mighty Princess.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 15

Your Favorite Actor?

Hyun Bin

Hyun Bin is one of my favorite actors of all time, not just my favorite Asian drama actor. He is the main reason that I am now completely obsessed with Korean dramas all thanks to his role as Joo Won in Secret Garden. I have watched him in more dramas and movies since and I have yet to be disappointed.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 13

The Last Asian Drama You've Seen?

Kou Kou Kyoushi 1993

This is an older Japanese about a love affair between a high school biology teacher and one of his female students. This is one of the earliest jdramas that I've watched and it was quite a jarring experience. It reminded me a lot more of an early kdrama except for the fact that it featured a lot more mature content than I'm used to seeing in any Asian drama including nudity, sex, rape, lesbianism and attempted murder by the female lead. All that aside, I actually really enjoyed it-the acting and story were both really good.

60 Day Drama Challenge: Day 12

Your Favorite Drama Ending?

As much as I love Asian dramas, I don't always find myself happy with the way most of them end. There have been so many that have endings that feel rushed, incomplete and more of an afterthought than a strong conclusion to the story. I like happy endings, all story lines being tied up and most of all, I enjoy the couple ending up together.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 10

Your Favorite Drama Song?

The Melody "Paradise"

Coffee Prince has my favorite OST of any drama that I have yet to watch. All the songs are great, varied, and unique. Unlike most dramas that seem to just play the same songs over and over despite the situtations (I'm looking at you Boys Over Flowers), the soundtrack to Coffee Prince is full of wonderful songs that match perfectly to the scenes in which they're used.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 9

Your Favorite Taiwanese Drama?

Mars

Meteor Garden is my favorite Tdrama but as with the previous question, I'll discuss my 2nd favorite.  Again, it's based on a manga which was actually the first manga that I ever read. Vic Chou and Barbie Hsu have amazing chemistry in this and they were actually a couple when this drama was filmed.  This tdrama is mature and has a more serious tone which I really enjoyed-I tend to not like the overly comical and cheesy tdramas.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 8

Your Favorite Korean Drama

Secret Garden

I've already discussed my favorite Kdrama in a previous question but I will talk about a close second - Secret Garden. SG is one of the most popular Korean dramas and one that always pops up on lists and drama mvs. It was the second drama that I ever watched and tits the reason that I am so addicted to Asian dramas today.  SG did so many things right and remains one of the few dramas that I can re-watch and never get tired of.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 7

Your Favorite Japanese Drama?

Love Shuffle

Love Shuffle was a unique jdrama and one of the more mature dramas that I've watched in terms of content and plot. Besides great characters and lots of humor, there were also lots of  plot twists in this drama that I really enjoyed.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 6

Your Least Favorite Asian Drama

Devil Beside You

Devil Beside You is a really popular Taiwanese drama and one of the few I've watched. I loved Meteor Garden but DBY really didn't cut it for me. Mike He was fine was Rainie Yang really bothered me-her overacting and comical facial expressions were a real turn off, like Jan Di on crack. I have since learned that that the ultra comical female leads are more common place in Taiwanese dramas hence why I haven't watched a lot more.

Personal Taste

Lee Min Ho is a decent actor and he's quite handsome but that's not enough for me to suffer through this torture. Besides the boring script and glacial pace, the female lead was one of the worst I've ever seen. She was stupid, annoying and acted like a 5 year old (which made it even creepier when Min Ho starting treating her like one).

Delightful Girl, Choon Hyang

Another super popular drama that I ended up not liking. This drama was really frustrating and I didn't like any of the lead characters which is always a bad sign. The male lead in DGCH is incredibly annoying and stupid, making me dislike the main couple and the drama entirely.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 5

Your All Time Favorite Asian Drama?

The Princess' Man

There are a lot of dramas that I love and continue to re-watch.  Funny enough my favorite drama is one that I don't plan on re-watching for at least a couple years due to the emotional roller coaster that it is. The Princess' Man set the standard for a great drama in a lot of ways-intriguing plot, great acting, interesting characters, strong female lead, passionate kiss scenes, good action sequences and a solid ending. TPM isn't perfect but it comes pretty close.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 4

Your First Taiwanese Drama?

Meteor Garden

Meteor Garden is my favorite Hana Yori Dango adaptation and one of my favorite dramas of all time. It's from 2001 so the fashions and hairstyles are quite jarring but the drama itself is great and definitely worth watching.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 3

Your First Chinese Drama?

Palace Lock Heart Jade

Okay, so this question was actually supposed to be about my first Korean drama but I felt that I answered that pretty well in the first question so I changed it-I might do that if I feel the questions get too repetitive or I think of something better. Palace is a historical drama about a girl from this century who travels back in time to the 1700's. Her vast knowledge of history and her quirky personality gains her the attentions of the royal family and she finds herself falling for two of the princes while searching for a way home. Although this is a historical drama it is also a loose adaptation of Hana Yori Dango (I told you I have a problem). It is a long drama at 39 episodes but I really loved it-it was funny, sad, romantic and intriguing.

60 Day Asian Drama Challenge: Day 2

Your First Japanese Drama?

Hana Yori Dango

You might begin to notice a pattern and that's because the first dramas I ever watched from Korea, Japan and Taiwan were Hana Yori Dango adaptations (kinda obsessed). Contrary to popular opinion, this is actually my least favorite version right after Let's Go Watch Meteor Garden. If I hadn't read the manga beforehand I think I would have enjoyed it more but I just didn't care for how condensed the story was. Important plot points were either left out entirely or combined with other story lines that just felt out of place. I loved the Makino and Domyouji in this version but the F4 wasn't as good as I'd hoped for. The second season was more enjoyable and I do think that this is a good drama, just not an amazing one.
