2012 Dramas: Most Disappointing

I didn't watch Fashion King or Dr Jin so I can't comment on those supposed atrocities but there are quite a few dramas that disappointed me this year.

Big: If any drama deserves an award for being disappointing it's Big. It seemed like it would be an amazing drama-it starred Gong Yoo, the Hong Sisters were writing it, it had a interesting premise, and did I mention it starred Gong Yoo? It was great at first-it was funny and Gong Yoo was shirtless quite a lot. But the Hong Sisters seemed at a loss for what to do with the plot and the story went in circles never seeming to get anywhere new. I could forgive a lot of the sloppy writing because Gong Yoo was amazing but then the last episode aired and I felt like flying to South Korea to physically assault the Hong Sisters. Seriously, what were they thinking? We only wanted a few things from the ending-Kyung Joon in his original body and awake, that's not too much to ask for right? I guess it was since we were denied the image we waited all 16 episodes for and instead were treated to Gong Yoo obscuring his face under an umbrella, causing me to feel cheated and a bit angry.

Panda and Hedgehog:Out of all the 2012 dramas that I was able to watch this year, P & H was the worst. There are a lot of good things in this drama but the bad writing and terrible female lead condemn it. Panda was a normal female lead-cute, naïve, ditzy, stubborn. Around episode 5 the writers decide to give her a personality change and make her completely annonying and selfish. I found myself wishing Hedgehog would turn out to be gay because I disliked Panda so much.

Rooftop PrinceAgain, a drama that starts off great but soon loses momentum. My biggest gripe with this drama is female lead Park Ha. She's a good lead for the first half of the show, she's funny and independent. But as the plot gets more cliched, Park Ha suffers some sort of brain damage and becomes a complete idiot.

King2HeartsThis wasn't a bad drama by any stretch of the imagination but I did find myself somewhat disappointed. Firstly, the villain. The drama has quite a few comedic moments but an overall serious tone, having such a comical villain really throws off the entire story. He's a magician-does that really make any sense? Secondly, Ha Ji Won as . After watching her in a few dramas and several movies I have come to the realization that Ji Won isn't a terribly good actress. She's beautiful, does great action work and looks good while crying. This is the second time she has been cast as a supposedly strong female character(Secret Garden) who spends the majority of the drama acting anything but. Thirdly, the death of my favorite character. I won't go into details for those who haven't watched but this character's death was completely unnecessary and did nothing to really advance the storyline.

K-POP: The Ultimate Audition: I enjoyed this drama and if the ending had been better it would not have ended up on this list (maybe it would have for the kissing scenes). One of the worst endings I have ever seen mostly stemming from the fact that the drama had it's episode count cut down from 16 to 14. Although it lost 2 episodes that doesn't mean that the writers couldn't have wrote a decent final episode. Instead of trying to focus on the outcomes of a few important romances and the showcase the Juniors were practicing for we got an episode that created more questions and some flashbacks of previous performances. It was extremely lazy writing and ruined what could have been a perfectly decent drama.

The Moon Embracing the SunSurprisingly, this is one of my favorite dramas of the year and it might have been my favorite if not for the female lead (lot of dramas with bad female characters this year). The first 5 episodes are great, the child actors are amazing. Starting in episode 6 the main characters grow up and all is well except Yeon Woo/Wol. Yeon Woo was smart and interesting at 13 but as an adult she became boring and lost any personality she once had. I loved the rest of the cast and the story but having a piece of cardboard as a female lead took a lot of romance and interest out of an otherwise great drama.

Faith: Lee Min Ho could read a phone book for 16 hours and girls would go crazy naming it their new favorite show. Faith isn't that bad but it could have been a lot better. I was not a huge Min Ho fan until I watched this drama-something about long hair and period clothing really does it for me. He was really good in Faith and the drama would not have been as good without him. The biggest flaw of Faith is the lazy writing-the writers never seemed to know what they wanted from the show. Faith changed from episode to episode and wasn't able to juggle it's multiple themes, sometimes completely ignoring whatever element didn't fit that week's episode. The superpowers are a prime example of bad writing, they are used frequently by some of the characters in the first couple of episodes and then are rarely ever be used again without much explanation.

And The Best Dramas of 2012 Are . . . .

It's time to pick the best and worst dramas, couples, actors and story lines as the year draws to a close. I am frantically trying to finish up some dramas and compile my picks for the year. I only started watching Asian dramas in February but I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. I can already tell that my choices are  going to differ greatly from the lists I've already seen. Expect an extensive list by the end of the month that includes mostly Kdrama but also some Taiwanese and Japanese dramas thrown in as well.

Horror Movie Challenge: Day 8

Your Favorite Foreign Horror Movie

Let The Right One In

Let The Right One In is a 2008 Swedish film based on the novel of the same name. Oskar is bullied at school, has no friends and lives with his mother. One day he meets Eli and the two become extremely close- the only problem is that Eli is a vampire. This movie is amazing and it is a fresh take on vampires. The acting of the two child stars is great and the cinematography is beautiful.

Horror Movie Challenge: Day 7

A Horror Movie You Think No One Has Seen

I'm a huge horror fan and have been since I was a kid. I have seen lots of independent and foreign horror  films. Picking a horror movie that is unknown to horror fans is pretty impossible so I'll pick some films that a casual horror fan might not of heard of.

Dance of the Dead

Dance of the Dead is an independent zombie film made in 2008. It was made with little money and featured a lot of unknown actors. It is a great movie and has a place in my top ten zombie films.

Night of the Creeps

I am a huge fan of 80's movies and I had never heard of this movie. It is really enjoyable and had some great characters.

Martyrs

Martyrs is a French horror film made in 2008. I rarely meet anyone who has seen this movie let alone heard of it. It is one of the most disturbing films that I have ever seen. It is scary, suspenseful and shocking.

Where I Watch Asian Drama

I only got into Asian dramas this past February but I am already completely obsessed.  Boys Over Flowers was the first drama I watched while browsing Netflix. It's not the best drama ever but it was my first so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I've spent a lot of time looking for different sites on which to watch Asian dramas and here are my favorite ones:

Viki.com (Free)-They upload and sub currently airing dramas extremely fast. They have mainly kdramas and a few Taiwanese and Chinese dramas.

Gooddrama.net (Free)-This site has tons of Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese and Chinese dramas. There are only a few commercials but you have to watch the episodes in three to four parts which can be a bit frustrating.

Dramacrazy.net (Free)-This site also has a ton of Asian dramas but suffers from frequent pop-ups.

Hulu.com ($9.99 monthly)-This site has a lot of dramas but they are almost all Kdramas. Also the frequent commercials can get very annoying.

Netflix.com ($7.99 monthly)-They have added lots of Kdramas recently which is great but they have yet to add any Japanese, Taiwanese or Chinese dramas.

Dramafever.com (Free with commercials, $9.99 monthly with no commercials) This site has a lot of Kdramas and a few Taiwanese and Chinese dramas. There are frequent commercials if you use the site for free.

Mydramalist.com-This not a site to watch drama but it allows you to make lists of dramas that you've watched and plan to watch. There are drama reviews, recommendations and forums. I love this site and it helps me find dramas to watch and connects me with other Asian drama lovers.

Asian Drama Review: Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge

Score: 10/10

Number of Episodes: 10

Episode Length: 45 minutes
Air Date: January 15, 2010

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (Perfect Girl Evolution) is a Japanese drama that is adapted from the manga of the same name. The story is about Sunako, a girl who loves all things horror, wears a cape and doesn't like to leave her room. She prefers to socialize with two plastic anatomy models and a skeleton rather than actual people. Her rich aunt Mine runs a boarding house and offers her four male tennants free rent if they can turn Sunako into a lady. Every character has some issue or situation that they are dealing with. Sunako became completely asocial and eccentric due to bullying in high school. Kyohei is extremely handsome and hates it. The attention he receives from females (and some males) has gotten him fired from countless jobs and ruined his relationship with his parents. Ranmaru is a playboy that has never had a serious relationship because he can only love himself. Yuki is in a long-distance relationship and feels inadequate compared to his friends. Takenaga has a domineering father who wants to control his life. While attempting to change Sunako, the guys each begin to go through changes themselves. In the end Sunako never needed to change, she just needed to be accepted for who she was.

I have only watched a few Japanese dramas but I really like them. They tend to have fewer episodes (between 9-11) compared to the sometimes lengthy Korean dramas (16-50+) and are easier to get through. I found myself comparing this drama to Hana Kimi due to the humor and quirky characters, although I liked more of the characters in this drama.  Sunako and Kyohei are the primary focus but all the characters get a chance to shine. Acceptance and friendship are strong themes in this drama and help keep it grounded amongst all the bizarre situations. The pacing of the story was great, it didn't drag or get weighed down by the more serious and emotional plot elements. I really enjoyed this drama and I highly recommend it.
